The Hawaiian Islands have been one of the world's most coveted vacation destinations for decades and justifiably so. These beautiful islands offer diversity, an ideal tropical climate, breathtaking scenery and unique flora and fauna seen nowhere else. If you disagree, then you probably haven't been there.

Hawaii is composed of six major islands: Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the big island of Hawaii. Honolulu, on Oahu, is the states capitol city and the many posh hotels and resorts in and around Waikiki receive the largest percentage of tourists annually. The 1.3 million population of the Hawaiian Islands is also the densest on Oahu.

For example, Kilauea on Hawaii's big island is the world's most active volcano and generates lava flows that keep increasing the island's size over time. On Kauai, Waimea Canyon is 10 miles long and nearly a mile wide. On Lanai, there remains a large ship securely trapped in the waters of Shipwreck Beach. And then there is the crater of Haleakala on Maui which is nearly the size of the island of Manhattan in New York City and the world's tallest sea cliffs on the north side of Molokai.

The fact that there is so much to see has given birth to 'island hopping' where visitors have lodging on one island and take day trips (hops) to other islands. This, however, allows you to but scrape the surface; each island probably requires 3-4 days to be seen adequately.

The Best Time To Visit Hawaii

In reality, anytime is a great time to visit Hawaii, but there are times of the year when the crowds are smaller, prices are somewhat lower and even air fares are less. The busiest tourist season is between December and February when most tourists want to escape the snow and cold of their mainland US states. The temperatures vary between 68° F and 80° F during these months. Between June and October, the hottest period in the islands, temperatures vary between 75° F and 88° F. Rainfall is the heaviest between December and March, but occurs mostly as brief, heavy afternoon showers that are usually followed by sunshine. Hotel rates are generally the lowest between April and mid-December, so if you're after the best price, visit during this period.

The temperature of the ocean is quite consistently around 74 degrees. However it can be as warm as 80 degrees in mid-summer. Since the kids are out of school during the same period, expect the beaches to be considerably more crowded.

If you are planning to stay in Waikiki, be advised that the last week in April and the first week in May bring a sizeable influx of Japanese tourists for the annual "Golden Weeks" holidays.
